Here’s a quick guide for Windows:

1. Get the latest TortoiseSVN installer.
2. Run through the installation process and restart your machine.
3. Create a directory ‘SVN’ and in that directory a sub-directory ‘Thematic’.
4. Right-Click on the sub-directory ‘Thematic’ and choose ‘SVN Checkout’.
5. Enter the SVN link and click ‘OK’. TortoiseSVN will start to run the initial checkout. As soon as it’s ready click ‘OK’ again.
6. Do not try to copy the ‘Thematic’ directory to your server. You would copy all the hidden .svn files.
7. Create a directory ‘Work’.
8. Right-Click on the sub-directory ‘Thematic’ and choose ‘Tortoise SVN’ / ‘Export’. In the next dialog choose your directory ‘Work’. The software will create a sub-directory ‘Thematic’ under the directory ‘Work’. In this sub-directory you’ll find a working copy that can be transfered to your server.
9. After some time you might want to get a newer copy. Just right-click on your ‘SVN’ / ‘Thematic’ directory and choose ‘SVN Update’.  Don’t forget to repeat step 8.

Whatever you do, please keep in mind that a SVN copy is not fully tested. You might find functions that are experimental and won’t make it into the next release. There might be functions that might change several times until the next release. If not otherwise told by your favorite support guy do not rely on a new function. And don’t blame us for something that is not working as expected.

In my example for this task, I’m going to remove the sidebar from my page ‘Forum’.

The major requirement for this and all other code snippets: You have to use a child theme!

We start with the child theme’s functions.php and add the following code:

Now that we’re able to switch off the sidebar for the page ‘Forum’, we need to make the gained space available for our content.

We open the child theme’s style.css and add the following code:

Please note that this modification is related to the 2c-r-fixed layout. You might want to change the width settings according to your own design.

Now we need to create your style-home.css. Copy style.css to style-home.css. Once the file is created you need to change the line responsible for the layout. Change it from 2c-r-fixed to 3c-fixed.  Your style-home.css should now contain the following code:

Now that we have defined two different layouts, we need to define where the different styles should be used. For this we edit the functions.php in your child theme’s directory and add the following code:

That’s it. Now your blog is using two different layouts.

One last note about further modifications of your stylesheets. Modifications that are related to the 2c-r-fixed layout or the 3c-fixed layout need to be done either in style.css or style-home.css. Do not modify the original files in the Thematic directory. Modifications that are related to both layouts need to be done in style.css and in style-home.css.

Ich habe neben den Arbeiten an Thematic in den letzten vier Wochen ca. 80 Beiträge im Support Forum von Thematic geschrieben.  Vieles davon waren Code Schnipsel rund um Thematic aber zum Teil auch für einige WordPress Plugins. Einige davon wurden einfach so aus dem Gedächtnis heraus geschrieben, andere wiederum ausführlich getestet.
Damit diese Arbeit nicht so einfach in den Tiefen des Forums verschwindet, werde ich diese Schnipsel alle nochmals ausgiebig testen und hier in einem separaten Bereich veröffentlichen. Dieser Bereich kann dann auch als separater RSS Feed abonniert werden.

In der weiteren Planung befinden sich Dokumentationen zu Thematic und vor allem zu dem neuen Menü. Diese werden dann parallel bei Ian und hier zur Verfügung gestellt.

Und dann startet Ende des Monats auch schon wieder die Arbeit an Thematic 1.0.

Darüber hinaus arbeiten Ian und ich daran, Thematic für Anwender und Designer noch flexibler zu gestalten. Dabei wollen wir sowohl Anwender als auch Designer nicht durch vorgegebene Optionen einschränken, sondern mit Hilfe von Filtern und Actions ausreichend Freiraum für eigene Anpassungen zur Verfügung stellen.

Wir werden zwar mit der kommenden Version nicht alle Hausaufgaben erledigt haben, sind aber auf dem richtigen Weg, Thematic zu einem flexiblen Theme Framework für WordPress weiterzuentwickeln.

Die erste Falle, die man hier ansteuert, ist der Anwender. Sollte der nämlich auf die Idee kommen im Auszug eines Beitrages HTML-Codes zu verwenden, werden diese auch mit get_the_excerpt() im Meta-Tag dargestellt und können das Layout der Seite kräftig durcheinander würfeln.

Also schnell ein strip_tags() eingesetzt und das erste Problem ist elegant umschifft.

Jetzt kommt der Anwender jedoch auf die Idee das Plugin “Advanced Excerpt” einzusetzen.  Dieses Plugin klinkt sich automatisch in the_excerpt() ein.  Und es kommt erneut zu unerwünschten Effekten. Die HTML Tags sind zwar jetzt dank strip_tags() gelöscht, dafür haben wir zumindest für das Meta-Tag unerwünschte Inhalte.

Es bleibt somit nur die Möglichkeit mit einer eigenen Funktion die Funktionalität von get_the_excerpt() nachzubauen.

Im Übrigen scheidet the_excerpt_rss() wegen der vorgenannten Gründe ebenfalls aus.

Da ich die Zuordnung der Widgets zu den Sidebars sicherer gestalten wollte, stellte sich mir die Frage, wie ich ohne manuellen Aufwand die Zuordnung der Widgets zu bestimmten Sidebars aufheben kann. Google war auf jeden Fall nicht direkt mein Freund.

Viele Anwender haben bei einem Wechsel der Themes dieses Problem, vor allem wenn das ursprüngliche Theme über mehr Sidebars verfügt als das neue Theme. Die Widgets sind unter Umständen auf Sidebars bzw. deren ID registriert, die jetzt nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen. Es bleibt also nur die Möglichkeit auf das alte Theme zu wechseln und dort die Widgets per Hand aus den Sidebars zu löschen.

Nach etlichen Suchvorgängen und noch viel mehr Forenbeiträgen bin ich dann über eine sehr einfache Lösung gestolpert.  Diese besteht aus zwei Zeilen Code:

$null = null;
update_option(sidebars_widgets,$null);

Diese sind jetzt in Thematic unter den Optionen als “Reset Widgets” eingebaut.

Könnte eigentlich jeder Theme Autor machen und somit das Leben vieler Anwender erleichtern. Oder sehe ich das verkehrt?
